One of the most common questions people have when they’re obtaining a passport is “How much is this going to cost me?”
Passport prices vary, depending on the circumstances. Here’s a quick breakdown of current government fees:
- If you’re age 16 or older and you submit your application in person, you’ll pay a $75.00 application fee and a $25.00 execution fee for a passport book. The total fee is $100.00
- If you’re age 16 or older, submit your application person, and order a passport card, you’ll pay a $20.00 application fee and a $25.00 execution fee, for a total cost of $45.00. However, passport cards are are only valid for land and sea travel to Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean.
- If you’re under age 16 and request a passport book, you’ll pay a $60.00 application fee and a $25.00 execution fee, for a total of $85.00.
- If you’re under age 16 and apply for a passport card, you’ll pay a $10.00 application fee and a $25.00 execution fee, for a total of $35.00
- If you are obtaining a passport renewal by mail, you only have to pay the application fee. So, you would pay $75.00 for a passport book and $20.00 for a passport card.
- You can request expedited service from the US Passport Agency for an additional $60.00, plus the cost of overnight shipping. Please note that even if you pay the additional $60.00 and pay for overnight shipping to and from the agency, obtaining a passport can still take weeks.
So, those are the government’s fees for obtaining a passport, as of February 2009. However, it’s a good idea to hire a third-party expediting service to submit your passport for you. Expediting services make getting a passport easier and much faster!
Expediting fees vary depending on how fast you need your passport. Our premium service is same-day processing, but there are other, more affordable options available that take only a few days longer.

January 29th, 2012 at 1:06 pmHi Elizabeth,
A passport card is a smaller, wallet-sized card that costs less to obtain. However, it can only be used for land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. You cannot use it to travel anywhere else, and you cannot use it for air travel at all. A passport book is just the standard, full-sized passport. It’s more expensive to get, but you can travel anywhere in the world with it. Hope this helps!
