If you are traveling soon and you need your passport during a government shutdown, you need to apply for your passport immediately. Many of the past government shutdowns only keep the passport offices open while funds are available. If there is a prolonged shutdown, processing times can be delayed beyond the 4-6 weeks of routine passport processing times.
