If you’re planning a trip to Europe in 2025 or beyond, there’s a major change coming to how travelers enter and exit the Schengen Area. The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace traditional passport stamping with a biometric digital record, designed to streamline border crossings and strengthen security.

Updated October 2025 to include the latest confirmed launch date for the EU Entry/Exit System.

Here’s everything you need to know about the EU Entry/Exit System 2025—when it launches, who it affects, and how to prepare before your next European adventure.

What Is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new automated border control program developed by the European Union. It will record the time, date, and place of entry and exit for all non-EU and non-Schengen travelers visiting the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period).

Instead of manual passport stamps, the system will register:

Your biometric data (a facial photo and fingerprints)

Travel document details

Entry and exit timestamps

The goals of the system are to:

Strengthen border management and security

Detect overstays and illegal entries more efficiently

Speed up future crossings for repeat travelers once registered

Over time, this system will completely replace traditional passport stamping at Schengen borders.

When Does the EES Start?

The European Union has confirmed that the Entry/Exit System will begin rollout on 12 October 2025, with full implementation across all participating countries expected by 10 April 2026.

During the transition, some border checkpoints may continue using manual passport stamps alongside the EES. Travelers should allow extra time at airports, land crossings, or seaports during this rollout period.

Who Does the EES Apply To?

EES applies to:

Non-EU / non-Schengen nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days)

This includes travelers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other visa-exempt countries

EES does not apply to:

EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens

Holders of EU or Schengen residence permits

Long-stay visa holders, in most cases

Children under 12 may be exempt from fingerprinting, though a photo will still be required.

What Data Will Be Collected?

When you first enter a Schengen country under the new system, border authorities will collect and securely store:

A facial image

Four fingerprints

Date and place of entry

Travel document details

Data will be stored for up to three years, or five years if an overstay or border irregularity occurs.

This information will be used to verify identity, track stay duration, and enhance border integrity across all 29 participating Schengen countries.

Do Travelers Need to Register in Advance or Pay a Fee?

No. Travelers do not need to pre-register for EES or pay any additional fees.
The system automatically records your information at your first point of entry into the Schengen Area.

For many travelers, the process will take only a few extra minutes during the first trip. Future entries will be faster, as biometric data will already be stored.

Will This Change the 90/180-Day Rule?

No. The familiar “90 days in any 180-day period” rule for visa-free travelers remains the same.
The EES simply provides a more accurate, automated way for border officials (and travelers themselves) to track time spent in the Schengen Area.

You’ll still need to ensure you don’t exceed 90 days total within the rolling 180-day window.

How to Prepare for the New EES

Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, these steps will help ensure a smooth experience:

Check your passport validity – Make sure it’s a biometric (e-chip) passport and valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Arrive early – For your first EES trip, allow extra time at border control for biometric capture.

Stay informed – Some airports and land borders may still use stamps during the transition.

Track your travel days – The EES automates this, but keeping your own log ensures compliance.

Brief your group or team – Corporate and frequent travelers should include EES awareness in travel planning.

Renew your passport if needed – If you recently received a new passport, you may need to re-enroll your biometrics upon first entry.

What Are the Potential Impacts?

While the EES is designed to simplify travel long-term, the early phase may include:

Slightly longer wait times for first-time entrants

Variation across borders during rollout (some still using stamps)

Greater enforcement of overstay rules thanks to digital tracking

Travel managers should monitor which ports are fully EES-enabled and prepare travelers accordingly.

How Does EES Differ from ETIAS?

Although both EES and ETIAS are part of the EU’s smart-border initiative, they serve different purposes:

EES records entry/exit data at the border

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a pre-travel authorization that visa-exempt travelers will soon need before arriving

ETIAS is expected to launch shortly after EES, complementing the new system for short-term travel management.

Key Takeaways for Travelers

EES begins rollout October 12, 2025, and will be fully live by April 10, 2026

Applies to non-EU travelers entering Schengen for short stays

Collects biometric and travel data at first entry — no advance registration needed

No fees, but arrive early for first trip under new system

The 90/180-day rule still applies

As of May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act is officially in effect. If you’re flying domestically within the U.S., you’ll need to show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification at TSA checkpoints.

Avoid travel delays—make sure you’re prepared before heading to the airport.

What is the REAL ID Act?

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was a response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to standardize identity documents for improved security. As of May 7, 2025, all travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant ID to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.

If your current driver’s license isn’t updated to meet federal standards, it will no longer be accepted for domestic air travel.

How to Check if Your ID is REAL ID Compliant

Look for a star in the upper corner of your driver’s license or state ID. This star indicates REAL ID compliance.

All U.S. states and territories now issue these IDs, but many residents still haven’t upgraded. To verify if your ID is compliant, visit your state’s DMV or driver licensing agency website.

Alternatives to a REAL ID

If you haven’t upgraded your license, don’t worry. The TSA accepts other federally approved forms of identification:

U.S. Passport

U.S. Passport Card (valid only for domestic flights and certain border crossings)

State-issued Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (available in states like Michigan, Vermont, and New York)

Other federally recognized identification cards like Global Entry, NEXUS, or military IDs

Why You Should Act Now

Even though the deadline is here, many travelers are still unprepared. Upgrading to a REAL ID or getting a passport can take weeks—so don’t delay.

Some DMV offices require in-person appointments and documentation, and processing times can vary by state. Starting now helps you avoid long waits and last-minute panic.

Do You Need a Passport for Domestic Flights?

No, a passport is not required for domestic U.S. flights—as long as you have a REAL ID-compliant ID or another form of TSA-approved identification.

However, having a valid U.S. passport or passport card adds flexibility and peace of mind. A passport is essential for international travel, and a passport card is a convenient, wallet-sized alternative that’s valid for:

Domestic air travel (TSA-approved ID)

Land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda

For more on the differences between a U.S. passport and a U.S. passport card, check out Passports vs Passport Cards.

What You Can Do Now

If your driver’s license isn’t REAL ID-compliant, or if you need to update your documents, consider applying for a U.S. passport. RushMyPassport offers fast, expedited services to help you get your passport as quickly as possible, in as little as 24 hours.

Planning an international trip? Before you pack your bags and head to the airport, it’s crucial to understand the visa requirements for U.S. passport holders. While American travelers enjoy visa-free access to many countries, some destinations still require a visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA)—even for short stays.

Missing this step could mean delays, denied boarding, or canceled plans. Don’t let paperwork get in the way of your adventure!

Use this guide to learn which 10 popular countries require a visa or eTA for U.S. citizens—and how to apply without the hassle.

What’s the Difference Between a Visa and an eTA?

A visa is an official document or stamp in your passport that allows you to enter a country. Some visas must be applied for in advance, while others can be obtained on arrival.

An eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry permit linked to your passport. It’s typically required for short-term stays and is easier to obtain than a traditional visa.

How to Stay Up to Date on Travel Requirements

Visa rules change frequently, so double-check the latest info before you fly. Here’s how to stay informed:

✅ Check the U.S. State Department’s Travel Advisories
✅ Apply for your visa or eTA well in advance to avoid surprises

Is Your Passport Travel-Ready?

Before applying for a visa or eTA, make sure your passport is valid. Many countries require at least six months of validity beyond your return date. If your passport is expired—or close to it—it’s important to take care of the renewal process early to avoid delays.

Bottom Line

Visa and entry requirements vary by destination—and they can change at any time. Before you travel, be sure to check the latest information for your destination on the U.S. State Department’s country pages. Enrolling in STEP is another smart move, as it keeps you informed about any safety or travel updates.

And don’t forget to confirm your passport’s validity. If you’re short on time, there are services available to help expedite passport renewals or assist with visa applications, so you can focus more on planning your itinerary than paperwork.

Safe travels—and enjoy the journey.
The post Top 10 Countries That Require a Visa or eTA for U.S. Passport Holders appeared first on RushMyPassport.

Americans traveling to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean by land or sea need an ID that complies with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to return to the United States. While everyone traveling internationally by plane needs a US passport, land and sea travelers have more options. So, should you get a passport book, a passport card, or an enhanced driver’s license? The table below summarizes the differences:

The U.S. Passport Book is valid for all types of international travel, including air, land, and sea. You can also use a passport card for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, but it cannot be used for air travel.

If you don’t have a passport, you may still be able to travel to these destinations with an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), depending on your state. EDLs are WHTI-compliant (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) and can be used for land and sea travel to select countries in the Western Hemisphere.

What is the Enhanced Drivers License?

The Enhanced Drivers License contains a radio frequency identification chip that contains information about the person the EDL was issued to, so they are harder to fake than a regular driver’s license. Here is an example of the New York Enhanced Drivers License:

US Passports vs. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses

What are the advantages of having an EDL? First of all, an EDL is cheaper than a passport. Secondly, it fits more comfortably in your wallet than a passport book does, so it’s more convenient. And if you frequently drive across the border, it’s helpful to only need one form of ID for the entire trip.

However, if your state doesn’t offer EDLs, you can always get a passport card, which is the same size as a driver’s license. But remember: neither EDLs nor passport cards can be used for international air travel, even emergency flights home from Canada or Mexico.

About the REAL ID Act

Starting on October 1, 2021, you’ll need a Real ID to take a domestic flight. All US passports and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses qualify as REAL IDs. And even states that don’t offer Enhanced Driver’s license now have REAL ID-compliant licenses available. However, your current driver’s license might not be compliant, especially if it’s been a while since you renewed it. Read more about the Real ID Act here for details.

Which States Offer the Enhanced Drivers License?

Currently, only 5 states offer EDLs: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. If you live in one of those states, should you get an EDL or a passport?

An EDL will allow you to make quick trips across the border to Canada or Mexico by car or by boat. However, you should be aware that an EDL cannot be used for travel to countries other than Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean nations included in the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. To visit those countries, you’ll still need a US Passport.

Also, remember that all international air travel requires a passport book. Even if you’re on a road trip or taking a cruise, you might need to fly home if an emergency arises. For this reason, it’s best to also carry a passport book. Additionally, if you’re going on a cruise, be aware that even though the EDL is WHTI-compliant, not all cruise lines will accept it without a birth certificate.

Travelers to Mexico should also note that according to the Department of State: “The Mexican government may not let U.S. citizens who are driving or walking to Mexico enter the country at land border crossings if they do not have a U.S. passport book or U.S. passport card.”

So, if all you need is a WHTI-approved ID for quick excursions on the other side of the border, an EDL may be fine. However, if you’ll be visiting our neighbor to the north (or south) for any length of time, it’s safest to travel with your passport. With that in mind, choosing between a passport book or an enhanced driver’s license is easy for frequent travelers: get the passport so you have more travel options and you can fly home if needed in an emergency.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport?

Currently, it takes about 4-6 weeks plus shipping time to get a passport if you apply directly to the Department of State with routine processing. If you pay the additional $60 to have it expedited, you’ll still be waiting at least 3 weeks. However, a private passport expediting company can often have your passport processed in as little as 24 hours.
The post US Passport Vs Enhanced Driver’s License appeared first on RushMyPassport.

In a digital age where convenience is key, your wallet just got a little thinner and your phone a little smarter. Google Wallet now allows you to store your US passport digitally. While it can’t replace the physical passport for international travel, this digital ID option offers a new level of ease and efficiency for travelers passing through TSA checkpoints. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting new feature, and how it could change the way you travel.

What’s the Point of Adding Your U.S. Passport to Google Wallet?

You might be wondering, why would I want to add my passport to Google Wallet if I can’t use it to travel internationally? While the feature doesn’t allow you to use your digital passport for border control or immigration (yet), it serves a key purpose when navigating airports and TSA security.

By adding your passport to Google Wallet, you’ll have a digital ID that can be scanned or tapped when passing through TSA checkpoints. This means no more fumbling for your physical ID at the airport; you can streamline the process and save time.

This feature is part of a broader push towards using digital IDs for a variety of everyday tasks, including identity verification, account recovery, and even car rentals. But for now, it’s TSA that’s leading the way.

How to Use Your Digital Passport at TSA Checkpoints

As of now, Google Wallet allows you to use your passport as a digital ID at select TSA checkpoints. Here’s how it works:

Consent and Scan: Instead of handing your physical passport or ID to the TSA officer, you’ll scan the digital ID QR code or tap your mobile device on the digital ID reader.

Identity Verification: After scanning, your mobile device will prompt you to consent to share your digital ID information with TSA. Once you agree, TSA will take your picture for verification.

Ready When You Are: One of the best features is that you can prepare your digital ID before you reach the checkpoint, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

This feature is gradually being rolled out, so while it may not be available everywhere just yet, you can expect it to become more common in the coming weeks.

How to Add Your US Passport to Google Wallet

Adding your US passport to Google Wallet is simple. Follow these steps:

1. Open Google Wallet

Open the Wallet app on your phone and tap “Add to Wallet”.

2. Choose “ID”

Select “ID” from the available options and choose the option to “Create an ID pass with your passport”.

3. Scan Your Passport

You will need to scan the photo page of your passport using your phone’s camera, along with the security chip on the back of the passport cover using NFC (Near Field Communication).

4. Verify Your Identity

To complete the process, you will be prompted to take a selfie video for identity verification. This ensures that you are the rightful owner of the passport.

5. Ready to Go!

After a few minutes, you will receive a notification confirming that your digital ID pass is ready for use in Google Wallet.

Pro Tip: Google is working with partners to expand the use of digital IDs for a variety of services such as account recovery and even car rentals, so expect even more uses for your digital passport in the future.

Limitations of the Digital Passport in Google Wallet

While the convenience of a digital passport is undeniable, there are some important limitations to keep in mind:

No Use for International Travel: You cannot use your digital passport for border control or immigration. You will still need your physical passport for entry into foreign countries.

Limited Availability: Not all airports or TSA checkpoints support digital IDs yet. This feature is rolling out gradually, so it may take time to see it implemented nationwide.

Not a Full Replacement: This feature does not replace your physical passport; it only serves as a backup ID for TSA checkpoints and some other identity verification tasks.

Why You Should Consider Digital Travel IDs

As travel technology continues to evolve, the benefits of having a digital ID in your pocket become more apparent. Beyond convenience, digital passports offer increased security. Because your passport information is encrypted, it is less prone to theft compared to carrying a physical copy.

In addition, the growing use of mobile wallets like Google Wallet means that more and more services will accept digital IDs for things like hotel check-ins and car rentals, further streamlining your travel experience.

What to Do If You Don’t Have a Valid Passport for Digital Use

While adding your passport to Google Wallet offers a convenient way to streamline your travel experience, it’s important to remember that you still need a valid physical passport to travel internationally. If you’ve realized that you don’t have a passport yet, or your current passport has expired and you need a new one fast, there’s no need to stress.

That’s where RushMyPassport can help. If you find yourself in need of an expedited passport, whether it’s for a sudden trip or to make sure you can use your passport as a valid form of ID for digital services like Google Wallet, our team is here to make the process quick and easy.

Editor’s note (October 2025): This article contains information from earlier EES announcements.
If you’re planning a trip to Europe soon, there’s a big change coming your way. Starting November 10, 2024, the European Union will officially phase out the practice of stamping passports for non-EU tourists. Instead, the EU will introduce a digital Entry/Exit System (EES), which will streamline the border control process using biometric technology to track entries and exits.

Goodbye Passport Stamps, Hello Digital Border Controls

The switch to a digital system marks the end of an era. Physical passport stamps, which have been a keepsake of international travel for many, will no longer be used at EU borders. According to EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson, “At every single airport, every single harbor, every single road into Europe, we will have digital border controls.” This change will impact travelers visiting EU countries, simplifying the process by making it faster and more secure.

How the EES Works

Under the new system, non-EU visitors entering Europe will have their fingerprints and face scanned digitally. This biometric data will be used to verify a person’s identity at border crossings and will be stored for future visits. Once the system is live, border officers will cross-reference this biometric information with a traveler’s passport on their first visit, ensuring that each entry and exit is properly tracked. In future trips, these biometrics will be automatically verified at entry and exit points, making the border process faster and more efficient.

If you’re visiting Europe after November 10, be prepared for a quicker and more tech-savvy entry. This system not only eliminates the need for passport stamps but also provides a higher level of security and accuracy, ensuring that all entries and exits are correctly recorded.

What Travelers Need to Know

To use the new EES system, travelers must have a biometric passport. These passports, also known as e-passports, have been issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security since 2007. If your passport has a small symbol of two rectangles with a circle on the cover, it’s a biometric passport and ready for the EES system.

Travelers without a biometric passport, however, will face more thorough processing at the border and will not be able to use the self-service passport control kiosks. If you don’t have a biometric passport, consider renewing it before your trip to avoid delays at the border.

EES vs. ETIAS: What’s the Difference?

It’s important to note that the EES system is separate from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which is expected to be implemented in 2025. While the EES system will handle biometric data for border control, ETIAS is an authorization program designed to enhance security for visa-exempt travelers visiting the EU for short stays.

If you’re a U.S. citizen planning a trip to the EU, you will still need to apply for ETIAS authorization starting in 2025. Until then, having a biometric passport and utilizing the new EES system will streamline your entry into Europe.

A More Convenient Travel Experience

This move to a digital system reflects Europe’s commitment to modernizing its border control processes. With the introduction of the EES, travelers will experience faster, more efficient, and secure border crossings. Gone will be the days of waiting for a passport stamp at the border. Instead, technology will take the reins, offering a smoother, worry-free travel experience.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Europe soon, make sure your passport is biometric and get ready for a tech-driven, seamless entry process. And don’t worry, while you may miss out on getting a passport stamp as a travel memento, the convenience of faster and more secure border control will make your travel experience all the more enjoyable.

For any last-minute passport renewals or to check if your passport is biometric-ready, RushMyPassport is here to help with all your expedited passport needs.
The post EU Replaces Passport Stamps with Digital Entry System appeared first on RushMyPassport.

Great news for U.S. travelers! The U.S. Department of State is expanding its passport services to make international travel more convenient.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced:

To better serve the growing number of Americans seeking U.S. passports, the Department is taking steps to establish six new passport agencies.

Here’s what this means for you and how you can benefit.

The Surge in Passport Holders

Demand for passport services is high, so it’s important to plan ahead to avoid peak busy times. However, if you find yourself needing a passport at the last minute, there are expedited options available.

In 1990, only 5% of Americans had a passport. Today, that number has skyrocketed to 48%. Reflecting this trend, the Department of State issued over 24 million passports in Fiscal Year 2023—a record! This surge highlights the growing need for more passport services to meet the demands of American travelers.

New Passport Agencies: Locations and Benefits

To better serve travelers, the Department of State is opening six new Regional Passport Offices in:

– Salt Lake City, UT

– Kansas City, MO

– Orlando, FL

– Charlotte, NC

– San Antonio, TX

– Cincinnati, OH

These new agencies bring the total to 35 Regional Passport Agencies, along with over 7,400 passport acceptance facilities nationwide, including post offices and local government buildings.

Key Benefits for Travelers

Faster Processing: The new agencies offer expedited services, including same-day and next-day passport processing, perfect for urgent travel needs.

More Locations: With more agencies, travelers have more options for quick passport services, reducing the need for long-distance travel to existing locations.

Better Access: Strategically located in high-demand areas, these new agencies provide easier access to expedited services, with more appointment slots available for greater flexibility.

Still Doesn’t Solve These Issues

Can’t Wait for Open: The passport agency openings will help support those with “urgent travel needs,” but there’s no word yet on when they’ll open; they are still in the planning phase, so there’s uncertainty about when services will be available.

Still Need an Appointment: Even with the new agencies, you still need to book an appointment in advance, which might not always align with your schedule.

Distance Might Still Be an Issue: The new agencies may still not be conveniently located near your residence or workplace, making it inconvenient to access their services.

Potential for Errors: If mistakes occur during the application process, you’ll need to reschedule another appointment, potentially causing delays in obtaining your passport.

Plan Ahead for Smooth Travel

While the new Regional Passport Agencies will enhance service delivery, the Department of State encourages applying for or renewing passports well in advance of planned travel. This proactive approach helps avoid last-minute processing delays.

What If You Can’t Wait for the new Regional Passport Agencies to Open?

Regional passport agencies exist to help out travelers who need emergency passport services, but for a lot of people, they are not the easiest solution. If you’re unable to schedule an appointment at any of the current passport agencies and need a passport in a hurry, you may want to consider expediting your passport with a private expediting company.

Using a Passport Expediting Company

A registered passport expediting company will take your application to the Department of State, where it can be processed in as little as 3 business days. These services can hand-deliver your application to any current regional agency, saving you the hassle of appointments and waiting.

– Faster Processing: Your application can be processed in as little as 3 business days.

– Convenient Delivery: Your new passport is shipped overnight, reducing waiting time.

– Error Reduction: Expediting companies help reduce errors that could delay your application.

If you’re planning on traveling internationally and your passport is about to expire or has already expired, you may be wondering whether you should renew your passport or apply for a new one. It’s an important decision that can impact your travel plans and budget.

In this blog post, we’ll explore whether to renew your passport or submit a new passport application. We’ll also discuss the benefits of getting an expedited passport, which can be particularly helpful if you’re short on time and need your passport quickly.

So, whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time globetrotter, read on to learn more about passport renewal vs. new passport applications, and how to get an expedited passport.

Passport Renewal

If you meet all of the qualifications listed below, you can renew your passport instead of having to apply for a new one:

You were 16 or older when you applied for your most recent passport.

You still have your most recent US passport, and it is undamaged and in good condition.

Your passport is no more than 15 years old. Or in other words, if your adult passport with a ten-year validity is more than 5 years expired, you cannot renew it.

If you’ve changed your name since your last passport was issued, you have legal documentation to support the name change.

Passport renewals can be done through the mail or in person. Applicants can visit their local post office for the application or fill it out online: Passport Renewal Form DS-82. Be sure to include a recent passport photo along with a check for government fees, and include your recent passport.

New Passport

If your passport has been lost or damaged, you must apply in person for a new passport.

If you were under the age of 16 when you got your current passport, you need to apply for a new one.

If your passport is more than 15 years old, you’ll need a new one.

If you’ve changed your name and don’t have the applicable paperwork, you’ll also need to apply for a new passport.

What’s the difference between applying for a passport renewal instead of a new passport? When applying for a new passport, you have to go in person to a passport acceptance facility and fill out form DS-11, Application for a New Passport. Since you have to apply in person, you’ll pay a $35.00 execution fee in addition to the fees listed above. Plus, you’ll need to bring proof of identity and proof of citizenship.

This step in the process is extremely important and can impact the time it takes to get your new passport.

After you’ve submitted your application, all you have to do is have patience and wait for your passport to arrive in the mail. It can take up to 8 weeks for routine processing.

How To Get Your Passport Fast

If you need a passport quickly, it is important to understand how soon you’re traveling, and how quickly you’ll need your passport to ensure its delivery prior to your trip. If you’re planning to leave the country sooner than later, you’ll likely need some type of expedited passport service.

Current routine processing for passports currently takes up to 8 weeks. If you want to get your passport in time, it’s important to choose the right expediting method from the start.

Expedited Passport Service at a Passport Acceptance Office

One way to speed up the process of getting a passport is by requesting standard expedited services at the post office or another passport acceptance office. You’ll pay a $60 expediting fee in addition to your regular application fees. If you want overnight delivery, you’ll also pay an extra shipping fee.

Expediting at the post office generally gets you service in up to 3 weeks, and is not guaranteed. In addition, if there are any problems with your applications or documentation, your passport could possibly be delayed.

Expedited Passport Service at a Regional Passport Agency

There is another way to obtain a new passport, and that is to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency. However, there are some requirements you must meet. You must be departing for your international travel within 14 days or less, or if you’re leaving next month and need to get a visa before you travel.

In this situation, Regional Passport Agencies will typically get your passport to you within 8 business days. However, these appointments can be hard to obtain because there are only a handful of regional passport agencies serving the entire country, so you may have to travel to get to one near you.

Additionally, passport agencies often have limited operating hours. If you work during the day and can’t get time off, this may not be an option for you. At a Regional Passport Agency, you’ll pay the same additional $60 expediting fee you’d pay if you were applying for passport expedited service at a Passport Acceptance Office.

Using a Passport Expediting Company

If you need a passport sooner than a Passport Acceptance Office or the post office, but you can’t (or don’t want to) go to a regional passport agency, it may be worth considering using a private passport expediting company.

A registered passport expediting company will take your application to the Department of State, where it will be processed in as little as 7 business days. The company will then ship your new passport back to you, usually overnight.

Not only does using an expediting company reduce the time needed to receive a United States passport, but it also lessens the chance of errors that could delay your application. If there’s a setback at the passport office, the expediting company can inform you immediately so that corrections can be made, and your passport can be on its way to processing and back to you in time for your trip.

If you’re traveling internationally, you will need a passport to board your flight. But do you need a passport before making flight reservations?

U.S. law requires all travelers, regardless of citizenship, age, or destination, to hold a secure document such as a passport to depart the United States by air. While it is not required to have a passport to make flight reservations, it is strongly recommended.

While you may be able to book your airline ticket without your passport number, you must have a valid passport in hand before you arrive at the airport. If you don’t have a valid passport, you will not be permitted to board your flight.

If you find yourself without a valid passport you have options, such as renewing or applying for a new passport. If you need one quickly, you may also elect to expedite your passport to ensure you have it prior to your flight.

How To Get A United States Passport

The process to obtaining a U.S. passport can be overwhelming at a glance but doesn’t have to interrupt your travel plans. While there are several different passport applications depending on the situation, the process to get a passport is largely the same.

For more information on eligibility and how to get started on getting a passport, click from the list below.

Updated 05/12/2023

Do you need a passport for domestic flights? No, but you do need a valid ID and your driver’s license may no longer be acceptable. The Real ID Act is in full effect and most states now issue compliant IDs. But that doesn’t mean your current driver’s license is valid for domestic air travel. You may need to update your ID or get a passport in order to fly within the USA.

Will You Need a Passport for Domestic Flights in 2023?

In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. In response to the 9/11 attacks, the Real ID Act created new security standards for the state’s driver’s licenses and IDs. If you live in a Real ID-compliant state, you probably noticed that you have had to bring additional documents with you the last time you renewed your driver’s license.

All states (including Washington, DC) now issue Real ID-compliant licenses. But that doesn’t mean your state ID or driver’s license is valid. You may need to get an updated state ID or driver’s license in order to have a compliant updated Real ID.

“This is an important step in enhancing commercial aviation security and we urge travelers to ensure they have compliant documents,” said Acting Secretary Kevin K. McAleenan. “DHS is committed to working with states as they continue their efforts to issue REAL IDs to Americans.”

REAL ID: Is Your State ID Compliant?

Check this map from the Department of Homeland Security to see the latest updates to the list of states currently compliant with the Real ID Act.

Just because your state is now compliant doesn’t mean your ID is compliant. You may need to get a new state ID or driver’s license. For many travelers, a passport is a better and safer alternative. Your US Passport is a federally recognized ID and can be used for travel anywhere in America and across the globe. Our advice: just skip the drama. Get a passport, and you’ll be covered no matter where you plan to travel!

Other Approved Forms of ID

Don’t want to get a passport? You do have other options. The enhanced driver’s license, (which has a RFID chip like a passport) is compliant. Plus, with an enhanced driver’s license, you can drive (but not fly) across the border to Mexico or Canada.

Not all states issue enhanced driver’s licenses. Besides a passport, other acceptable documents include:

DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)

US military ID

Permanent resident card

Border crossing card

Tribal photo ID

HSPD-12 PIV card

Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

Transportation worker identification credential

As you can see, using a passport or a passport card for domestic flights is the most practical option for most people.

Remember, you can only use a passport card for domestic flights. If your destination is outside of the US, you’ll need a passport book.

For more on the differences, see Passports vs. Passport Cards.

Getting a Passport

Plan ahead. If you don’t have a compliant ID and you have a trip planned, apply for a passport well ahead of time. Getting your passport can take 6-8 weeks for regular processing and up to 3 weeks for expedited processing from the post office.

If you need a passport more quickly, you can make an appointment at the nearest regional passport agency, or RushMyPassport can submit your application for you for an additional fee. Expediting companies like RushMyPassport help you with the application, help catch and correct mistakes, and provide super-fast processing with no need to travel to an agency or wait in line.
