Originally published October 2025, updated July 2026 with the latest ETIAS timeline, fees, and requirements.

For those planning a trip to Europe, there are two key updates regarding how Americans can enter and leave the Schengen Area: one change is already in effect, and the other is set to launch soon.

The EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) now uses a biometric digital record instead of the old passport stamping method. The ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization similar to the U.S. ESTA, is expected to launch, though the exact timing is currently under review.

Here’s everything you need to know about both — what’s already changed, what’s coming, and how to prepare before your next European trip.

What Is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated border control program developed by the European Union.

It logs the time, date, and location for when travelers from outside the EU and Schengen Area enter and exit during short visits (up to 90 days within any 180-day timeframe).

Instead of manual passport stamps, the system registers:

Your biometric data (a facial photo and fingerprints)

Travel document details

Entry and exit timestamps

The goals of the system are to strengthen border management and security, detect overstays and illegal entries more efficiently, and speed up future crossings for repeat travelers once registered. EES has now fully replaced traditional passport stamping at Schengen borders.

When Did EES Start?

The EES began on October 12, 2025, and was fully implemented in all participating Schengen nations by April 10, 2026.

It’s now fully operational — if you’ve traveled to the Schengen Area recently, you’ve likely already gone through it.

Some border checkpoints continued using manual stamps briefly during the rollout period, but that transition window has closed.

First-time travelers after registration should allow additional time at the border for biometric screening.

Who Does EES Apply To?

EES applies to:

Non-EU / non-Schengen nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days)

This includes travelers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other visa-exempt countries

EES does not apply to EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens, holders of EU or Schengen residence permits, or long-stay visa holders in most cases. Children under 12 may be exempt from fingerprinting, though a photo will still be required.

What Data Does EES Collect?

Upon your initial entry into the system, border officials will gather and securely store a facial image, four fingerprints, the date and location of your entry, along with your travel document information.

Data is stored for up to three years, or five years if an overstay or border irregularity occurs.

You don’t need to register beforehand or pay any fees. When you enter the first time, the system automatically saves your details. After that, future entries are quicker because your biometric information is already stored.

The 90/180-day rule hasn’t changed.

EES provides border officials with a more precise, automated method to monitor the duration of stays in the Schengen Area. However, travelers still cannot exceed 90 days in total within any rolling 180-day period.

What Is ETIAS, Exactly?

ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is another significant update coming for U.S. travelers. Unlike the EES, this system isn’t active yet.

It’s an electronic travel authorization, similar to the U.S. ESTA or the UK’s ETA. It’s not a visa — you won’t be filling out consular paperwork or attending an appointment. It’s a short online application that screens visa-exempt travelers before they arrive, tied to your passport.

If you’re a U.S. citizen who currently travels to Europe without a visa, ETIAS doesn’t change that — it just adds a quick pre-travel step on top of what EES already does at the border.

When Does ETIAS Actually Launch?

There’s a lot of outdated information circulating on this, including a Q4 2026 date that was widely reported for months. Here’s the current, verified status:

The Q4 2026 target has been removed. In mid-July 2026, the EU quietly pulled the “last quarter of 2026” launch window from the official ETIAS website. The page now just says ETIAS “is currently not in operation,” with no replacement date given.

A 2027 launch is now considered most likely. Per Financial Times reporting, eu-LISA (the agency building the system) has concluded internally that a 2026 launch isn’t feasible, largely due to fallout from the EES rollout. A revised date is expected after eu-LISA’s board reconvenes in September 2026, and the European Commission has committed to announcing it about six months ahead of launch.

The application portal is not open yet. If you see a website currently accepting ETIAS applications, it’s not official — the real portal will be hosted at travel-europe.europa.eu.

No action is needed from you today, but it’s worth checking back for the confirmed date once the EU announces it.

Who Needs ETIAS?

If you’re a U.S. passport holder traveling to any of the 30 European countries in the Schengen Area — France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, and most of mainland Europe — for tourism, business, or transit, you’ll need an approved ETIAS once it’s live. It covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, the same rule that already applies today.

A few countries you might expect to need it for don’t require it — Ireland, for example, isn’t part of Schengen and has separate entry rules. Always check the destination-specific requirements before you assume.

How Much Does ETIAS Cost?

The European Commission officially raised the fee from €7 to €20 in July 2025, citing inflation and rising operational costs, and to bring it in line with similar systems like the UK’s ETA and the U.S. ESTA. Travelers under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee, though they still need to complete the application. Once approved, ETIAS is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first — a one-time cost per passport, not a per-trip fee.

How Does EES Differ from ETIAS?

This is the most common mix-up travelers run into. EES is the border system already in place — it records your entries and exits with a facial scan and fingerprints instead of a passport stamp. ETIAS is the pre-travel authorization you’ll apply for before you go, expected sometime in 2027 pending an official announcement. EES checks you in and out at the border; ETIAS clears you in advance, before you ever arrive. ETIAS couldn’t launch until EES was fully operational, which is part of why ETIAS has been delayed for years.

What This Means for Your Passport

ETIAS is tied directly to your passport number, and most Schengen countries require your passport to stay valid for at least three months beyond your departure date from the Schengen Area.

If your passport is nearing its expiration date, is damaged, or you’re not sure it’ll be accepted, now’s the time to check — before the ETIAS portal opens and before the travel season gets busy.

Traveling Beyond the Schengen Area? You May Still Need a Visa

EES and ETIAS both cover the Schengen Area, but if your itinerary includes a country outside that zone — or you’re traveling for a purpose that doesn’t qualify for visa-free entry — you may still need an actual visa. That’s a separate process, with its own paperwork and timelines. RushMyTravelVisa handles that side for business trips, longer stays, and countries with more complex entry requirements, so you’re not piecing together multiple systems on your own.

Don’t Overlook Travel Medical Insurance

Getting cleared to enter Europe is only half of being prepared. None of these systems — EES, ETIAS, or a visa — cover you if you get sick, injured, or need medical care while you’re there. U.S. health insurance typically doesn’t extend overseas, and emergency care or medical evacuation abroad can get expensive fast.

It’s worth building travel medical insurance into your pre-trip checklist the same way you think about your passport and ETIAS. For a full breakdown of what it covers and why it matters, see our guide: What Is Travel Medical Insurance & Why You Need It.

Your Pre-Europe Trip Checklist

Before your next Europe trip, run through this:

Check your passport’s expiration date — make sure it clears the 3-month-beyond-travel rule

Watch for the official ETIAS portal opening — bookmark travel-europe.europa.eu and ignore third-party sites claiming early access

Confirm whether any part of your itinerary needs a separate visa, not just ETIAS

Look into travel medical insurance before you go, not after something happens

Give yourself buffer time at the border — EES biometric checks can still add a few minutes, especially on a first crossing

Europe’s entry process has changed a lot in the past year, but none of it has to be stressful if you handle it a few weeks out instead of the night before your flight. We’ll keep this page updated as the EU announces the exact ETIAS launch date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will US citizens need ETIAS?

Yes. Once ETIAS launches, U.S. passport holders will need an approved travel authorization before entering any of the 30 Schengen-area countries for tourism, business, or transit. It’s not a visa — it’s a quick online screening tied to your passport, similar to the UK’s ETA or the U.S. ESTA.

Do US citizens need a visa for Europe in 2026?

Not for the Schengen Area, in most cases. U.S. citizens can still travel there visa-free for short stays (up to 90 days in 180 days) — ETIAS adds a pre-travel authorization step on top of that, but it isn’t a visa. A visa may still be required if you’re traveling outside the Schengen Area or for a purpose that doesn’t qualify for visa-free entry.

Is ETIAS delayed to 2026?

ETIAS has been delayed multiple times since it was first proposed for 2021 — most recently, a planned Q4 2026 launch was pulled from the official EU website in July 2026. A 2027 launch is now considered most likely, though the European Commission hasn’t announced a firm replacement date yet. Check back here for updates as the official timeline is confirmed.

Need a Valid Passport Before Traveling to Europe?

Between EES already in place and ETIAS on the way, now’s the time to make sure your passport is valid and travel-ready. Renew or apply for your U.S. passport today with RushMyPassport.
The post EES & ETIAS 2026: Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Europe? appeared first on RushMyPassport.

Planning an international trip? Before you pack your bags and head to the airport, it’s crucial to understand the visa requirements for U.S. passport holders. While American travelers enjoy visa-free access to many countries, some destinations still require a visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA)—even for short stays.

Missing this step could mean delays, denied boarding, or canceled plans. Don’t let paperwork get in the way of your adventure!

Use this guide to learn which 10 popular countries require a visa or eTA for U.S. citizens—and how to apply without the hassle.

What’s the Difference Between a Visa and an eTA?

A visa is an official document or stamp in your passport that allows you to enter a country. Some visas must be applied for in advance, while others can be obtained on arrival.

An eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry permit linked to your passport. It’s typically required for short-term stays and is easier to obtain than a traditional visa.

How to Stay Up to Date on Travel Requirements

Visa rules change frequently, so double-check the latest info before you fly. Here’s how to stay informed:

✅ Check the U.S. State Department’s Travel Advisories
✅ Apply for your visa or eTA well in advance to avoid surprises

Is Your Passport Travel-Ready?

Before applying for a visa or eTA, make sure your passport is valid. Many countries require at least six months of validity beyond your return date. If your passport is expired—or close to it—it’s important to take care of the renewal process early to avoid delays.

Bottom Line

Visa and entry requirements vary by destination—and they can change at any time. Before you travel, be sure to check the latest information for your destination on the U.S. State Department’s country pages. Enrolling in STEP is another smart move, as it keeps you informed about any safety or travel updates.

And don’t forget to confirm your passport’s validity. If you’re short on time, there are services available to help expedite passport renewals or assist with visa applications, so you can focus more on planning your itinerary than paperwork.

Safe travels—and enjoy the journey.
The post Top 10 Countries That Require a Visa or eTA for U.S. Passport Holders appeared first on RushMyPassport.

Why Consider Travel Medical Insurance?

Think about this—what happens if you get sick or injured abroad? Without travel medical insurance, you could be paying thousands out-of-pocket. It’s even required for some destinations – countries like Schengen Zone nations, Cuba, and Thailand may require proof of medical insurance.

Here’s why having the right coverage is essential for all travelers:

✔ Vacationers – Peace of mind during international trips.
✔ Business Travelers – Protection during work trips abroad.
✔ Students Studying Abroad – Reliable coverage for extended stays.
✔ Frequent Travelers – Ideal for those taking multiple trips per year.
✔ Adventure Travelers – Extra protection for remote destinations or high-risk activities.

Why Choose Insurte for Travel Medical Insurance?

Monthly vs. Year-Round Travel Medical Insurance

When choosing a plan, it’s important to understand the differences between monthly and year-round coverage. Here’s a breakdown:

<colgroup>
<col width="187" />

Coverage Duration

Monthly Plan

Occasional travelers, single trips

Covers one trip at a time

Annual Plan

Frequent travelers, multiple trips

Covers all trips for 12 months

Final Thoughts: Stay Covered, Travel Confidently

Whether you’re planning a vacation, business trip, or studying abroad, travel medical insurance is an essential safety net. If you travel frequently, year-round coverage might be the best option to save time and money. If you’re just taking a short vacation, monthly coverage will give you peace of mind without a long-term commitment.

Don’t leave home without it—travel smarter, stay protected, and enjoy your trip knowing you’re covered for whatever comes your way.

Puerto Rico is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Caribbean, attracting millions of visitors each year. From its beautiful beaches to its vibrant culture and history, Puerto Rico offers something for everyone. But if you’re planning a trip to Puerto Rico, you might be wondering: Do you need a passport to go to Puerto Rico?

Good news: Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel there. However, there are still a few important things to keep in mind before your trip. Let’s dive into the details.

Passport Requirements for Puerto Rico

Do You Need a Passport if You’re a U.S. Citizen?

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling to Puerto Rico, you do not need a U.S. passport. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, which means it is treated like domestic travel for passport purposes. You can travel to Puerto Rico using just a valid government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license).

That said, there are still certain travel documents you may need, depending on the circumstances of your trip. Let’s take a look:

What You Need to Travel to Puerto Rico

Valid U.S. Government-Issued ID: A driver’s license or state-issued ID card is sufficient for U.S. citizens. Make sure your ID is up-to-date and meets your airline’s travel requirements.

Birth Certificate (for minors): If you are traveling with children under the age of 18, some airlines may request a birth certificate to verify their age or citizenship.

If you are traveling with other documents (such as a passport card or an enhanced driver’s license), check with your airline to confirm that they are acceptable.

Do You Need a Passport for Puerto Rico if You’re Not a U.S. Citizen?

If you’re not a U.S. citizen and you plan to travel to Puerto Rico, you will need a passport. The same rules for international travel apply here, so make sure to bring your valid passport along with any required visas.

Check with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for more specific visa requirements based on your nationality.

For Canadian travelers, if you need a passport services, visit RushMyPassport.ca for assistance with your application.

Traveling by Sea or Air to Puerto Rico: Does it Change Anything?

Whether you’re flying or traveling by cruise ship, the passport requirements for U.S. citizens remain the same:

Air Travel to Puerto Rico: For domestic flights from the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico, a passport is not required for U.S. citizens. You can travel using your driver’s license or other valid state-issued ID. Be sure to verify your airline’s ID requirements, as some may require more specific forms of ID.

Traveling by Cruise to Puerto Rico: You can board your cruise to Puerto Rico with a driver’s license or other photo ID, as long as the trip starts and ends in the U.S. However, if your cruise continues to international ports—or in case of unforeseen circumstances like medical emergencies—it’s wise to bring your passport for peace of mind.

Carrying your passport is always a good idea, even on domestic cruises, just in case you need to fly home or return early.

Passport Exceptions for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Puerto Rico

Unlike international travel, there are no special passport exceptions for U.S. citizens traveling to Puerto Rico. However, it’s important to note the following:

Minors Traveling to Puerto Rico: Children under 18 typically don’t need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico, but they must have proof of U.S. citizenship (a birth certificate or other documents). Double-check with your airline, as they may require additional documentation for minors.

Traveling with an Expired Passport: If you have an expired passport but are traveling to Puerto Rico (or another U.S. territory), you won’t need your passport for entry. However, if you plan to travel internationally from Puerto Rico, you will need a valid passport.

Do You Need a Visa to Travel to Puerto Rico?

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need a visa to visit Puerto Rico. However, if you’re not a U.S. citizen, you may need a visa to enter the U.S. territory. It’s best to check with the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country to find out the visa requirements.

Need a Passport for Another Trip?
Although you don’t need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico, you’ll definitely need one if you’re traveling internationally. Whether you’re heading to another Caribbean island, Europe, or beyond, a valid passport is essential for international travel.

Along with your passport, don’t forget other key travel essentials:

Travel Medical Insurance: Travel medical insurance is an important safeguard in case of unexpected emergencies abroad. Many health plans don’t cover international travel, so having the right coverage can prevent significant costs in the event of an accident or illness.

International Driving Permit (IDP): If you plan to rent a car abroad, an International Driving Permit (IDP) might be required in some countries. This official translation of your driver’s license is often necessary for car rentals and can prevent issues with local authorities.

Traveling with the right documents and preparation ensures a smoother, stress-free experience—whether you’re heading to Puerto Rico or exploring new corners of the world. Safe travels!
The post Do You Need a Passport to Go to Puerto Rico? appeared first on RushMyPassport.

As of February 25, 2026, airlines, ferry operators, and rail carriers (including Eurostar) cannot board U.S. travelers without a valid ETA. If you don’t have one, you don’t fly. Here’s what you need to know before you book.

What Is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is an electronic travel authorization digitally linked to your passport, similar to the U.S. ESTA. It’s not a visa — it’s a pre-screening check that confirms you’re cleared to travel before you ever board. The ETA is required for entry into all parts of the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Key Dates to Remember

October 2023–2025: The UK ETA rolled out in phases, starting with Gulf state nationals and expanding through 2024–2025 to include the U.S., Canada, and all EU member states.

February 25, 2026: Strict enforcement began. Carriers must confirm ETA status before boarding — the transitional flexibility from the early rollout is over.

April 8, 2026: The ETA fee increased from £16 to £20.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

Travelers from more than 80 visa-exempt countries and territories now need a UK ETA, including:

North America: United States, Canada, Mexico

South America: Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama

Europe: All 27 EU member states, plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland

Asia-Pacific: Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea

Caribbean: Bahamas, Barbados

Gulf States: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and others

British and Irish citizens cannot apply for an ETA and must travel on a valid British or Irish passport instead. Transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control may be exempt — check with your airline.

For a full list of eligible countries and specific requirements, visit here.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

Required Documents and Information:

Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least three months from your planned arrival date.

Personal Details: Full name, date and place of birth, nationality, address, parents’ names, email, and phone number.

Travel Plans: Details about your trip, including dates, accommodations, and purpose.

Additional Declarations: Information on criminal convictions, past travel to conflict zones, or recent deportation orders.

One Digital Passport-Style Photograph: You can take this using an online digital tool that meets the necessary size, background, and framing requirements.

Before starting your application, ensure you have:

The passport you will travel with (not a photocopy or digital passport).

Access to your email.

A valid payment method, such as a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

Cost: £20 per application (raised from £16 in April 2026).

Processing Time

Most applications are approved within minutes to a few hours, though the UK government still recommends applying at least three days before departure to allow for additional review if needed. Approval rates remain high — over 30 million ETAs have been issued since the program launched, with a 99.6% approval rate.

Approved ETAs are valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, allowing unlimited entries into the UK for stays of up to six months per visit. If you obtain a new passport, you’ll need to reapply, since the ETA is digitally tied to the passport number on file.

Why Is the UK ETA Important?

The transitional rollout period is over. Before February 25, 2026, some travelers could still board without a completed ETA due to phased enforcement — that flexibility no longer exists. Airlines now confirm ETA status before allowing boarding, which means a missed or delayed application can mean a missed flight, not just a delay at UK border control.

Ready to Apply?

Traveling can be an exciting experience, but the thought of navigating long security lines at the airport can dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or a once-a-year vacationer, time spent in security lines can be a significant stressor. Fortunately, the combination of CLEAR, TSA PreCheck, and RushMyPassport provides a streamlined solution to enhance your travel experience, making it faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

The Power of TSA PreCheck and CLEAR

First, let’s talk about TSA PreCheck. Launched in 2013, TSA PreCheck is an expedited screening program that allows trusted travelers to pass through security checkpoints with minimal hassle. With TSA PreCheck, you can keep your shoes, belts, and light jackets on and leave your laptop and liquids in your carry-on. This means no more fumbling with multiple bins or struggling to put everything back together before rushing to your gate.

CLEAR, on the other hand, takes security convenience to the next level by using biometric data—fingerprints and iris scans—to verify your identity and speed you through airport security lines. With CLEAR, you’ll be escorted to the front of the TSA PreCheck line, bypassing the ID check altogether.

This dynamic duo—TSA PreCheck and CLEAR—ensures that your time at the airport is as efficient as possible, allowing you to spend more time enjoying your journey and less time waiting in lines.

RushMyPassport: Your Partner in Passport & Visa Services

What if you discover your passport is about to expire—or worse, it already has? This is where a private expediting company like RushMyPassport can make all the difference. They specialize in expedited passport services, helping travelers avoid delays and ensuring their documents are ready before they even set foot in the airport.

In addition to passport services, RushMyPassport also offers visa services, streamlining the process for those traveling abroad. The processing time for visas can vary, and if there are any mistakes in the application, the processing will be delayed. To avoid these hiccups, we recommend reviewing the visa application process thoroughly.

Offering services such as new passport applications, renewals, and child passports, RushMyPassport provides personalized assistance to ensure your paperwork is accurate and processed swiftly. This means you can avoid the common mistakes that often cause delays in processing.

And here’s a bonus: all CLEAR+ Members receive special discounting off these services, making it even easier to get your U.S. passport quickly, so you’re prepared for your next adventure without the stress of last-minute arrangements.

Benefits of TSA PreCheck and CLEAR Membership

The combination of TSA PreCheck and CLEAR offers numerous benefits that make it a worthwhile investment for any traveler. Here are some key advantages:

CLEAR further accelerates the process by verifying your identity with a quick biometric scan.

Time Savings: Skip the long lines and save valuable time at the airport. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR work together to get you through security faster, giving you more time to relax before your flight.

Enhanced Privacy and Security: TSA PreCheck members experience fewer pat-downs and a less invasive security screening process, while CLEAR’s biometric verification adds an extra layer of security without the need for ID checks.

Global Benefits: TSA PreCheck is available at over 200 U.S. airports and is recognized by 85 airlines, making it a valuable asset for domestic and international travelers alike.

Convenience for Families and Business Travelers: TSA PreCheck makes traveling with children easier, as kids 12 and under can join their parents in the expedited lanes. For business travelers, the time savings and convenience of CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are invaluable.

How to Get Started

Once approved, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to add to your airline reservations for a smoother travel experience.
When is the Paris Olympics?

The Paris 2024 Olympics will take place from July 26th to August 11th, 2024. Athletes from around the world will gather in the iconic city of Paris. The city will transform it into a hub of sporting excitement and cultural exchange. The rich history and vibrant energy make Paris the perfect place for this extraordinary event.

How Many Times Has Paris Hosted the Olympics?

Paris holds the honor of hosting the Olympics for the third time, showcasing its enduring commitment to the spirit of the Games. The city previously hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924. This makes Paris the second city to host the Olympics for a third time, after London hosted the games in 1908, 1948, and 2012.

Tickets & Travel Requirements for the Paris Olympics

Attending the Paris 2024 Olympics can be a dream come true for many, but it’s essential to consider the associated costs. Ticket prices vary depending on the event and seating category. Additionally, you need to make sure that you have the required travel documents to enter France.

2024 Olympics Tickets

For those eager to witness the spectacle firsthand, buying tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympics is the first step. The official Olympic website provides a user-friendly platform for purchasing tickets, allowing fans to choose their preferred events and seating categories. We recommend keeping an eye on the official website for updates on tickets.

Passport Requirements

You will need a passport before traveling to France. Passports must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure.

The Government of France does not recognize the 12-page U.S. emergency passport, so this will not fulfill the travel requirements. If traveling on this emergency passport, you may be refused boarding and/or entry by immigration officials.

Visa Requirements

A tourist visa is not a travel requirement for U.S. citizens visiting France. U.S. citizens may enter France as a tourist without a visa and can stay up to 90 days in France. France’s travel requirements vary depending on the country you live in. While U.S. citizens do not need a travel visa, it is recommended to search the visa requirements for your country before booking your trip.

You may have heard about the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), originally scheduled to launch in 2024. This travel requirement would be needed for all U.S. citizens planning to travel to Europe. But luckily for Paris Olympics attendees, the ETIAS requirement has been pushed back to May 2025.

How to Find a Hotel for the Paris Olympics

Since this is a worldwide event, it’s a good idea to book your hotel as soon as possible. If you wait too long, you might have a hard time finding any open rooms that fit within your budget. Using a hotel booking site can help you find the best rates for a hotel close to the action!

What to Expect from the Paris Olympics

If you’re traveling internationally, you will need a passport to board your flight. But do you need a passport before making flight reservations?

U.S. law requires all travelers, regardless of citizenship, age, or destination, to hold a secure document such as a passport to depart the United States by air. While it is not required to have a passport to make flight reservations, it is strongly recommended.

While you may be able to book your airline ticket without your passport number, you must have a valid passport in hand before you arrive at the airport. If you don’t have a valid passport, you will not be permitted to board your flight.

If you find yourself without a valid passport you have options, such as renewing or applying for a new passport. If you need one quickly, you may also elect to expedite your passport to ensure you have it prior to your flight.

How To Get A United States Passport

The process to obtaining a U.S. passport can be overwhelming at a glance but doesn’t have to interrupt your travel plans. While there are several different passport applications depending on the situation, the process to get a passport is largely the same.

For more information on eligibility and how to get started on getting a passport, click from the list below.

How To Get An Expedited Passport

If you need a passport quickly, it is important to understand how soon you’re traveling, and how quickly you’ll need your passport to ensure its delivery prior to your trip. If you’re planning to leave the country sooner than later, you’ll likely need some type of expedited passport service.

Current routine processing for passports currently takes up to 8 weeks. If you want to get your passport in time, it’s important to choose the right expediting method from the start.

Expedited Passport Service at the Post Office or Passport Acceptance Facility

One way to speed up the process of getting a passport is by requesting standard expedited services at the post office or another passport acceptance office.

You’ll pay a $60 expediting fee in addition to your regular application fees. If you want overnight delivery, you’ll also pay an extra shipping fee. Expediting at the post office generally gets you service within 3 weeks, and is not guaranteed.

In addition, if there are any problems with your applications or documentation, your passport could possibly be delayed.

Expedited Service at a Regional Passport Agency

There is another way to obtain a new passport, and that is to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency. However, there are some requirements you must meet.

You must be departing for your international travel within 8 days or less, or if you’re leaving next month and need to get a visa before you travel. In this situation, Regional Passport Agencies will typically get your passport to you within 8 business days.

However, these appointments can be hard to obtain because there are only a handful of regional passport agencies serving the entire country, so you may have to travel to get to one near you. Additionally, passport agencies often have limited operating hours.

If you work during the day and can’t get time off, this may not be an option for you. At a Regional Passport Agency, you’ll pay the same additional $60 expediting fee you’d pay if you were applying for passport expedited service at a Passport Acceptance Office.

Using a Passport Expediting Company

If you need a passport sooner than a Passport Acceptance Office or the post office, but you can’t (or don’t want to) go to a regional passport agency, it may be worth considering using a private passport expediting company.

A registered passport expediting company will take your application to the Department of State, where it will be processed in as little as 7 business days. The company will then ship your new passport back to you, usually overnight.

Not only does using an expediter slash the time needed to receive a United States passport, but it also lessens the chance of errors that could delay your application.

As you wrap up your travel prep, it’s also a good idea to consider purchasing travel medical insurance, especially for international trips. While not required, it can provide added protection in case of unexpected disruptions, including medical emergencies abroad.
