And the answer is no. Not even if your US passport is lost, stolen or expired and you already have travel plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a US citizen, you need a valid US\u00a0passport to enter and exit the country.\u00a0<\/strong> You may also need a valid passport from the other country whose citizenship you claim.<\/p>\n<p>To quote the <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/legal\/travel-legal-considerations\/Advice-about-Possible-Loss-of-US-Nationality-Dual-Nationality\/Dual-Nationality.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Department of State,<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Most U.S. nationals, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399;\">How to Book Plane Tickets As a Dual Passport Holder<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you have more than one passport, which passport number do you use for booking tickets?<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, you should book your tickets and check your bags with the passport you plan to use to enter your destination country.<\/p>\n<p>And that will depend on where you&#8217;re traveling to and where else you hold citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you&#8217;re a dual US\/EU\u00a0citizen and you&#8217;re traveling to Germany, it only makes sense to flash your European passport when you arrive. There&#8217;s no need to worry about visas and you can stay as long as you like.<\/p>\n<p>So, you&#8217;d book your tickets to Germany using your EU passport.<\/p>\n<p>But regardless, you will still need a valid US\u00a0passport to leave the US. Here&#8217;s how to get one!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>How to Get a New Passport<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Has your US passport been lost or stolen? Or maybe you just never had one before? \u00a0Do you have a US\u00a0passport, but you&#8217;re not eligible to renew by mail as described below? Follow these instructions to get a new passport.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Apply in Person<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To get a new passport, or to replace a passport that&#8217;s been lost, stolen or damaged, you must apply in person at a passport acceptance office. Most people go to the post office, but you may be able to go to a local library, county court clerk or municipal building instead. Find the most convenient option for you <a href=\"https:\/\/iafdb.travel.state.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bring the following items:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Proof of Identity for Dual Citizens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You need one primary photo ID to show the passport office when you apply. This could be any one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A driver&#8217;s license (must be in-state and more than 6 months old)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5005 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushmypassport.com\/newlp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Passport_card-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"Dual citizenship passport ID card\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" \/><\/li>\n<li>An expired US passport (as long as the photo is still recognizable)<\/li>\n<li>A Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship (again, as long as the photo looks like you)<\/li>\n<li>A government or military ID<\/li>\n<li>A currently valid foreign passport<\/li>\n<li>A Mexican consular ID or a Green Card (if you&#8217;re a parent applying for a US citizen child)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may need more than one ID if your driver&#8217;s license was issued by a different state than the one you&#8217;re applying in, or if your primary ID is less than six months old.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Proof of Citizenship for Dual Citizens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you were born in the US, you&#8217;ll use your birth certificate. \u00a0If you were born abroad, you&#8217;ll use one of the following:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5004\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5004 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushmypassport.com\/newlp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Maria_Elizabeth_Winblad_1895-1987_birth_certificate-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987) birth certificate\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maria Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987) birth certificate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>A certificate of naturalization<\/li>\n<li>Certificate of citizenship<\/li>\n<li>Previous US passport<\/li>\n<li>Consular report of birth abroad or Certification of Birth<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you got your citizenship through the naturalization of your parents, you&#8217;ll need:<\/strong> your foreign birth certificate, an official translation if the original birth certificate isn&#8217;t in English, proof you were admitted to the US as \u00a0permanent resident, your parents&#8217; naturalization certificates AND proof of marriage for your parents or proof that you were in the custody of your US citizen parent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Born abroad to a US citizen parent, but don&#8217;t have a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth?<\/strong> You&#8217;ll need your foreign birth certificate (translated if necessary), proof of \u00a0citizenship for your parent(s), your parents&#8217; marriage certificate (if applicable) and an affidavit showing all of the places your US citizen parent lived before you were born, both in the US and abroad, and how long he or she lived in each place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you were adopted by US citizen parents after 02\/28\/1983,<\/strong> you&#8217;ll need evidence of permanent residence status, full and final adoption decree, and proof your US citizen parent(s) had legal and physical custody of you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Dual Citizenship Passport Requirements: Other Items<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One passport photo.<\/li>\n<li>Form DS-11.<\/li>\n<li>Passport Fees: $110 application fee and a $25 execution fee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><img wpfc-lazyload-disable=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4996 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushmypassport.com\/newlp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/dual-citizenship-passport-renewals-1.png\" alt=\"Dual citizenship passport renewals\" width=\"560\" height=\"150\" \/><\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Passport Renewals for Dual Citizens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dual citizens can renew their passports by mail, as long as all they meet all of the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have your US passport in your possession and it&#8217;s not\u00a0lost, stolen or damaged.<\/li>\n<li>Your most recent US passport is less than 15 years old, and you got it after you turned 16.<\/li>\n<li>The passport was valid for 10 years after the date it was issued AND it was issued in your current name or you have legal documents to support a name change request.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If all of those statements apply to you, congratulations! you can skip the line at the post office.
