passport processing status

It’s completely normal to feel just a wee bit nervous after you drop your passport application in the mail, especially if you’re on a deadline. After all, not only do you need your passport for travel, the application packet also contains important personal documents like your birth certificate. Being able to track your passport application provides peace of mind while you wait for your new passport to arrive at your doorstep.

So, can you track your passport application? Yes, you can track your passport application with the Department of State. Here’s how:

  • Go to the passport section of the State Department website.
  • Select “Application Status” from the menu on the left side of the screen.
  • Click on the “Check Application Status” link.
  • Read the relevant privacy disclosures and hit “OK.”
  • Look up your application using your last name (including hyphens and suffixes when appropriate), your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.

As long as your passport application is in the system, you should be able to see the date the passport office received it as well as the stage of the passport issuance process it is in. Once your passport has been issued and sent on its way to you, you’ll be able to see that as well. While you are waiting for your passport, consider getting an RFID passport protector. Keep your passport safe throughout your travels.

Passport Processing Times

Keep in mind that it does take at least five to seven business days to track your passport. If it’s been longer than that and your application doesn’t appear on the website, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to speak with a representative.

Though your passport application should appear in the system in about a week, allow at least 11 weeks for your passport to arrive in the mail. If you paid an additional $60 for expedited processing, allow 7 weeks instead.

To get your passport more quickly, you can make an appointment at one of the country’s 24 regional passport agency offices or use a private company like RushMyPassport.

RushMyPassport personally delivers your paperwork to the State Department for processing in as little as one week. In addition to being more convenient, we also allow you to track your passport application every step of the way. No more having to wait to see where your paperwork is!

  1. i applied for a passport i was seeing in progress since march 18 1922 but now it says we cant give you information at this time its been 8 months

    1. Did you apply for a passport using our expedited services? If you applied through USPS or traditional methods, such as a Passport Acceptance agent, you’d need to follow-up directly with the U.S. Department of State on the status of your passport application.

  2. I applied Oct 26 2021, expedited service, from my courthouse, it has been 15 weeks, and we fly tomorrow, no passport for my 16 year old. The locator number disappeared from their website, no phone call, no letter, no documents, so not so unusual after all, hmmm? Before the number disappeared they told me something was wrong with my child’s biometrics. But they couldn’t tell me what it was, and neither could I be helpful in solving their problem, something funny is going on here.

    1. Good afternoon! I cannot tell you if something is wrong, but based on the timeframe, you should have received your child’s passport. You need to speak directly with the Passport Agency to find out the cause of this delay and what steps you can take to resolve this matter. I recommend that you review any and all emails that included the passport locator number. Call 877-487-2778 to discuss with them. If necessary, you can discuss with them if there is an option for you to pick up the passport in person or go in person with your child to resolve the matter.

  3. I have been waiting on my passport since 12/14/21 and I still haven’t received it. I called several times to the Jamaican Consulate and no on ever answer the phone this is becoming very frustrating. Where can I check the processing statusl.

    1. I am so sorry. We do not have a relationship with the Jamaican Consulate to assist you further. They are closed on Monday, but I would encourage you to Google the consulate in your state or neighboring state.

  4. I also apply for a passport last year in DEC 22 i never receive my birth cert and my passport what do i need to do? to get all my document back?

    1. If you already have your application submitted, there is nothing we can do to help. We are only able to help expedite an application if we are the ones submitting it for processing. You will need to wait for the State Dept to do the routine processing.

  5. I’ve been waiting over two months and all anyone will tell me is processing. I was told the processing center is supposed to call me as we are to leave soon. No one has
