All U.S. citizens need a passport to travel outside of the country. One of the most common questions when planning international travel is, “How much does it cost to get a passport?” Passport fees depend on the passport type you are applying for and how quickly you need it. If you need a passport in a hurry and don’t have 6 weeks to wait on routine processing, the Department of State offers a 2-3 week expediting option at the post office.  If you need your passport even sooner, you can expedite your passport through a 3rd party hand courier for an additional service fee and get it in as fast as 1 business day.

Passport Fees Explained

(These fees are for routine processing and DO NOT include expedited fees. Please add an additional $60 to calculate totals with expediting plus the optional for overnight shipping.)

Application Fees are paid directly to the U.S. Department of State. This government fee must be paid by check or money order and must be written out for the exact amount. This detail is particularly important, as it is one of the most common reasons for delays.

Acceptance/Execution Fees:

Acceptance fees are paid directly to a Passport Acceptance Agent usually located at a post office, courthouse, or Regional Passport Agency. These fees are paid separately and a wider range of payment types, such as debit cards, credit cards, or cash are accepted. The acceptance agent will verify the identity of the applicant, witness signatures, and review required documents. This is required for all applicants applying for a new adult passport, lost replacement passport, or child passport using the DS-11 form. The fee is $35 per application.

Here is a list of acceptance agents near you.

Below are the total fees for a U.S. passport book and/or passport card.

First-Time Passport (16 or older):

Adult Passport Book – $130, Adult Passport Card – $30, or $160 for both.

Plus Execution Fee of $35 paid separately.

Passport Renewal:

Adult Passport Book – $130, Adult Passport Card – $30, or $160 for both

No execution fee if renewing your passport, or renewing by mail.

Child Passport:

Child Passport Book – $100, Child Passport Card – $15, or $115 for both

Plus Execution Fee of $35 paid separately

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Passports:

Adult Passport Book – $130, Adult Passport Card – $30, or $160 for both

Plus Execution Fee of $35 paid separately

Expedited Passport Fees

Expedited passport services are available for applicants who wish to have their passport processed quicker than the routine or standard times. Expedited services are optional, and therefore the fees to expedite are in addition to the required application fees and applicable execution fees.

When requesting expedited service at a Passport Acceptance Facility or a Regional Passport Agency there is an additional $60 charge. If you live near a passport office, you may be able to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency to get your passport as quick as 1-3 days, but there are very strict requirements to get an appointment to apply in person, and are not guaranteed, even if you are eligible.

Using A Private Company to Expedite Your Passport

If you need a passport faster than the routine processing service times offered at the Post Office, you may want to consider using a private Passport Expediting Company.

A private expediting company will take your application directly to the Department of State, where it can be expedited in as little as 1 business day. The company will then ship your new passport back to you overnight.

In addition to speeding up the application process, utilizing an expediting company can also reduce the chance of mistakes that could cause delays. If there is an error with your application or additional documents required, they are notified right away to resolve the issue.

The additional fee is based on service speed and how quickly you’ll need your passport back in time for your travel plans. While this may be a more expensive option, a Private Expediting Company may be the thing that saves your trip!

  1. Thank you for the article! I’ve recently lost my passport and then reported my passport lost online. With less than a month away, due to surgery overseas, I’m in need of expediting. Is the post office that offers 2-3 weeks service reliable? Thank you!

  2. Excellent article. What ID does mg husband have to bring to apply for a passport? He had never had one. Just a birth certificate?

  3. I have not renewed my US passport in the past 10 years. How do I renew it and what under application category I needed to filled up. Thank you very much!

  4. Do I need to pay the Acceptance fee if I am renewing my Passport due to marriage, and I am going to mail it myself? Or do I need to have the Post office agent verify my info and send it for me?

    1. Most name change updates happen through the passport renewal process. If your passport is less than 5 years expired, you can renew it. Call our office if you’d like more assistance. We can help you get your passport renewed with the name change.

  5. This was very helpful and informative? I have a couple of questions though.
    1. How long does our passports have to be valid before we travel out the country?
2.When should we apply for our passports if we want to go out of country in July 2022?

    1. Let’s hope we can answer your questions.

      1. Once the passport is issued, you can begin to travel. However, you must have 6 months validity remaining on your passport from your return date. For example, if you are traveling in May 2022, your passport must be valid through November 2022.

      2. Best to apply asap to avoid any delays, issues and for peace of mind.

  6. My passport expired 3 years ago. Do I need a whole new passport? Or can I get a passport card & would the passport card be acceptable for travel to Costa Rica

    1. Jasmine,

As long as you were issued a 10 year passport, you can still request a renewal of an adult passport for up to 5 years from the expiration date. If you were under 16 when the passport was issued or if it was issued for less than 10 years, then it is not renewable.

  7. How to pay the fee, $110 application fee as a money order to the US DEPARTMENT OF STATE and $35 execution fee as cash to the acceptance agent or clerk, correct?

    1. No, if you are not traveling soon, you just need to visit the post office or county clerk for routine processing. If you’re traveling soon, please call us and we can help you expedite the passport so you’re not waiting 6-8 weeks for your passport.

  8. I understand what is required to get, or renew a passport. However, I do not understand why I can’t continue to use my original book. I have a perfectly good (unused) book which has expired. Now the state department requires a $110 fee as well as certain other requirements. Why can’t I simply get my old book renewed like a drivers license? It all seems like a way for the government to get money out of my pocket unnecessarily. If I have to pay that much money, I should at least be able to go somewhere and have it renewed the same day. It seems utterly ridiculous that it’s not an option.

    1. Unfortunately we are all bound by the US Dept of State passport rules. The new passports do have improved security features which is perhaps why they require the update. If you’re traveling soon, please call us and we can help you expedite the renewal so you’re not waiting 6-8 weeks for your passport.

    1. The passport card can only be used to travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean by land and sea. The passport book is for all travel types to all countries across the globe. The book is better if you are only choosing one.

  9. My son’s application was denied because the birth certificate submitted was not the didn’t have the raised seal. We thought it was the original copy. The acceptance agent did not catch the error. If we go to them with the denied letter, would they be able to waive the $35, since this is an error on their part. We trusted they would let us know if something is not right prior to processing the application and charging us all the fee. And now do we have to repay the $110 again. This is very stressful because having to pay the $145 again is a lot of money.
    Thank you in advance.

    1. The denial letter from the passport agency should include instructions to resolve this issue. You would not need to make any additional payments. You just need to send the passport agency the long form birth certificate. If you need to have the documents adjudicated again, it would be up to the passport adjudication agents regarding their fee.

  10. Hello sorry to bother you but I was wondering what would prevent me from getting a passport? I’ve never had one before and I’m planning and wanting to go to Turkey:(

    1. Generally you can get a passport so long as you do not have a large amount of past due taxes, do not over more than $2500 in child support, and also if you do not have any felony convictions that prevent you from having a passport.

    1. You should have two separate checks as the acceptance agent fee ($35) is paid directly to them. The other check for the passport is submitted to the Dept of State.

  11. It’s my first time to apply for a passport. I need to go to japan and stay there for around three months. I’ve never been to places. Can you somehow help me? what are the requirements I need to prepare for me to go there? and how do you think would it cost me?

  12. David P, you have been very thorough in your responses (Thank you) would you kindly answer my Q’s as well? —#1 I will be renewing my 10 year passport due to expiration and name change, so I am aware I must mail it in with other docs, however do I get it back? The stamps I have from my travels are treasured memories. #2 Also, I will be applying for a passport for my 7 month old. How will that work traveling back a year from now for example when he looks nothing like the infancy photo? #3 Last Q, the passports must be valid for 6 months prior to travel? Or must remain valid for atleast 6 month post travel date? Thanks in advance.

    1. Thanks for the kind words! To answer your questions:

      1. Your old passport and any submitted documents (like marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc) will be returned to you by the Passport Agency. Usually it’s sent separately from the new passport but it shows up shortly afterwards.
      2. A child passport is valid for 5 years but they understand that the child will look differently from the infant photos. There will be no issues there.
      3. Six month passport validity is for BEYOND the last day of your trip. So if you are planning to return home on January 1, 2020, then your passport should expire sometime after June 1, 2020.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    1. The fees are listed on this post. They also depend on the speed you need for your passport processing. Call us today if you need your passport within the next 2 weeks.

      1. How is it that a third party service provider is able to have such a dramatic impact on speed of delivery? You pay to push an application to the front of the line? And seriously, logistically, how is a 24 hour turnaround time even possible? You have a manufacturing facility on site that prints out official passports? Just curious 🙂

        1. We are a registered courier service with the US Department of State Passport Agencies. We are able to hand carry the application for limited processing availability. We can get the passport processed the next business day and it’s even possible to get your passport within that 24 hour turnaround time. Shipping is required both ways but we do have brick and mortar locations across the country that may help reduce that time.

  13. My fiance and I are going to the Bahamas for our honeymoon in April. What all do I need to get our passports and can I do $220 on one money order and the other amount on another? And when should we get them and when do the expire?

    1. The government fees should be paid separately. For travel that far in advance, just visit your local post office or county clerk for routine passport processing.

    1. Routine processing is 6-8 weeks but our service is based on the speed you select. Our speeds range from 24 hr processing to 2 weeks processing.

  14. How fast can I get my passport? I need it for the 19 of this month. Is it possible to get it by then? I have scheduled my appointment already at post office.

    1. It’s possible to secure 24 hour passport processing (or 1 business day). When you need a passport fast, call us immediately for your best option.

  15. Should my passport be valid for at least six months to travel outside of the U.S. even if it’s a renewal?

    1. Yes, you should always have at least 6 months until your passport expires. So look at your return date back to America and you should have at least 6 months beyond that date.

  16. Can I write one check or get one money order for $145, or does it need to be one for $110 and another for $35?

  17. I have another passport and i am in America for 5 and more years. I like to know how many costs me to have American passport? Please answer me soon. Thank you.

  18. I had a passport back in 1980 but have since moved and can’t find it no longer need to get a new one at the post office new one how much and can I get it at the post office

    1. Mary, when are you traveling? The prices are listed in the post and are based on how fast you need it. If you can provide more info, we can better assist.

    1. If you need your passport fast, you can use our service and get it processed as quickly as you need it. If you are not traveling soon, your post office will offer 4-6 week service.

    1. As outlined in the article, it depends on the speed you choose. Routine processing is $110 but that’s 4-6 weeks. If you need it faster, call us today for your best option.

  19. It would be good if you would consider that most of us do not have a law degree. Accordingly I Pay $110.00 but who is the check be made too?

    1. The government fee is also explained on the DS passport application. You can write the check out to ‘US DEPARTMENT OF STATE’.

  20. My family and I were thinking of going to Paraguay in 2020 to visit my grandmothers since they are turning 84 and 85 this year. Our passports are expired by a over at 3 years. There are 4 people over 16 years old and 2 people under 16 years old. How much would it cost per person to renew our passports and is it possible to renew them without mail?

    1. The minors cannot renew their passports. It will be a new child passport for them. They cannot do it by mail and will need to pay the adjudication fee again as well ($35).

The adults over 16 can renew if their passports were issued when they were 16 or older. They will pay $110 for the adult renewal. Theirs can be done by mail.

        1. If you own a current passport book, you can apply for a card by mail for just $30 and avoid the $35 fee. However, you can’t apply for a card if you do not already have an active, current passport book. If you do anything in person, the $35 fee applies.

      1. Not exactly. The minor passports are not the same as an adult passport renewal. The child passport fees are $115 for routine processing.

    1. The card is only for land and sea travel to the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The book is for all forms of travel, including air travel. The book is going to be your best option.

      1. Hey! David i have a quick question if i go to the courthouse to get a passport what items will i need and also how much does it cost for 2-3 weeks wait time. People around me tell me they got theres in 2-3 weeks without waiting all that time thanks for answering if u do

  21. If my son gets a passport when he is 15 is it good for 5 years still or will he need to get an adult one when he turns 16?

  22. I was wondering how much it would cost to get a new passport for an adult. I have a passport but I got married and my name wasn’t updated to my new name. Also, my daughter needs one, she is 2. How much would that cost and how long would it take to receive our passports by mail?

    1. If you are traveling soon, please call us so we can make sure you get your passport on time. If you have no plans to travel, just visit your post office for routine service. $145 for adult passports and $115 for minor passports. The chart on this post also shows the breakdown of fees.

    1. You’re looking at $175 plus shipping fees. If you need to expedite your passport, you will need to pay an additional $60 govt fee. Contact us if you are traveling soon and need assistance.

      1. What if I apply for a passport card and at a later date need a passport book? Right now I do not anticipate needing the book, but if I already have a passport card would there be any less cost in the future if I find I need the book?

        1. The fees are going to stay the same but you can apply for the book at a later date and only pay the application fee of $110.

  23. Im applying for my first passport..Im traveling to Africa country of Nigeria in Feburary 2019 ..What are my first steps to getting a passport ASAP! and how much will it cost me

    1. It depends if you need your passport expedited. If you just do the slow process at the post office, it will be $205 plus shipping.

  24. I already had a child passport, but now I am over 16. Do I still need to pay the $35 processing fee for an adult passport.

  25. If I use your service to rush my passport, is that fee $119 on top of what I would pay at the post office ($145)? So, It would be a total of $264?

    1. Our fees are paid separately so it depends on the service level and shipping you choose. The govt fees are paid directly to them in the form of a check and are based on the expedited fee so there’s an additional $60 included.

    1. A card is all you need, however consider just getting the book. If there’s any emergency and you need to fly home, you will not be able to do so with the card.

    1. If the Passport Agency is closed, all passport processing will be delayed. That said, we submit the passports by hand that same day so we are able to get a passport processed within 24 hours if necessary.

  26. I had a 10 year passport that expired in 1998. Will I be renewing my passport or applying for a new one? Please advise. Thsnks.

    1. You can apply for your passport as early as you’d like. You should consider applying early if you don’t want to worry about processing delays. You can just visit your post office for routine service.

    1. Please call our office right away. Our prices vary on the speed you need the passport processed. The expedited child passport government fee is $175.

    1. It will depend on when you are traveling and if your passport was a 10 year or a 5 year passport. If you are traveling soon, please give us a call so we can help you expedite the passport on time.

      1. Thank you. Very informative article.
For clarification purposes, if I apply for a new passport card, by mail, is the total $30 or $65?

  27. My question is I need to renew my passport do I just take everything to the post office or do I mail to where ever the mail address is?

    1. It depends if you are using the routine service at the post office or if you need your passport processed faster. If you are expediting your application, it’s imperative you follow the instructions provided by your passport specialist. If you are using our service, we will guide you through each of the steps.

  28. What is the difference between a ‘New Passport’ vs. Passport Card?

I have never had a passport before and this is my first time applying. It would seem that I fall into the ‘Passport Card’ category as defined below…

New Passport (for adults age 16 and older): For a new adult passport book: $110 application fee and a $35 execution fee. The new total fee is $145.

Passport Cards (for adults age 16 and older): The application fee is $30 and the execution fee is $35. The new total fee is $65. Again, this is only if you want a passport card but you’ve never had a passport before. If you already have a passport, use Form DS-82 to apply for a passport card by mail and avoid the execution fee.

    1. The card is only for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. You should apply for the book so you can also use it to fly.

  29. So I’m thinking about getting a passport next year, and I see that you pay by check. I, however, do not use checks. I do have a checking account, but do my billing online. Any information that could help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  30. I am trying to understand this. I was told for a 4 day cruise trip a passport card is fine but if I do it by mail it is cheaper you say. So I don’t have to go to the post office and bring my application but if I do it by mail how will I give them a birth certificate with raised state seal as well as pictures and are 2 pictures needed for the passport cards? Thank you

  31. So if I am getting a new adult passport, I have to pay $110 for the application, $35 for the execution and $35 for the acceptance agent fee?

    1. No, the $35 is just paid once to the acceptance agent (aka execution fee). The total for routine processing is $145. If you are traveling soon, we recommend considering an expedited passport processing through us.

  32. Can I submit a renewal in person at the post office for the normal renewal fee? My passport is not expired, but I need a last name change. My daughter is getting a passport for the first time, and it would be most practical to just do both at the same time.

  33. So I understand that I am supposed to pay a $35 execution fee at the acceptance agent facility (post office), but I don’t know when or where I’m supposed to pay the $110 application fee. Do I pay it as a separate check or money order along side the execution fee, or should I wait for a later bill or email asking for the money? thank you.

        1. Each application should be compiled separately. Ideally you would include separate checks to prevent any issues and delays.

  34. I am trying to find out how much it will cost me to extent my English passport please It expires on 27th of June 18. I am 83 years old. In english please.

  35. My husband’s passport expired in 2009 and I need as new one asap. It is not going to be used for travel but for identity. Is it possible for you to get one for me or do I have to go to the postoffice. Kindly let me know.
    Edith

    1. Your only option to expedite a new passport will be to do it through the post office. They offer 2-3 week processing. You can get it sooner if you have confirmed travel plans, but that is a govt requirement.

  36. As my wife and I had ceased to holiday adroad, we decided not to renew our individual Passports, thus they became hopefully
out-of date. We are thinking of visiting my Canadian cousin and would like to know the costs of ‘getting our passports’ updated. We are both Senior Citizens.

    Harvey Kesselman

    1. If your passport is less than 5 years expired, you can renew at the post office for $110 plus shipping. If you need it faster, please call us so we can provide the best price option for you.

  37. I’m confused as to the price for renewal–here it says $110, but in the email I got from you it said to write a check for $185.89. Where does that second amount come from?

  38. Have a booklet already, just need to renew. Last name has charged because of divorce? How much ? What forms do I need? Where do I mail all this?

    1. Hi Mary Lou, You can use Form DS-82 to renew by mail. Include your current passport, a new passport photo and your divorce decree for the name change. If you’re using RushMyPassport to get your renewal processed more quickly, we’ll send you a FedEx label and instructions for mailing. Otherwise, just follow the instructions on the form. You can find the government fees here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/requirements/fees/fee-calculator.html

Processing time is 4-6 weeks for regular service, 2-3 weeks for expedited service through the post office, or if you’re in a hurry we can expedite your application for you for processing in as little as one business day. Let us know if we can help!

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

A passport card is a smaller, wallet-sized card that costs less to obtain. However, it can only be used for land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. You cannot use it to travel anywhere else, and you cannot use it for air travel at all. A passport book is just the standard, full-sized passport. It’s more expensive to get, but you can travel anywhere in the world with it. Hope this helps!

      Alison
