The “X” gender marker was introduced in 2022 for non-binary, intersex, and non-gender conforming individuals. While existing passports with the “X” marker remain valid, future passports will reflect the applicant’s biological sex at birth, either “M” (male) or “F” (female), based on supporting documentation.

Note: The Department of State is working on updates to its Form Filler and Form Eligibility Wizard tools for gender marker selection. For now, when renewing, you can only choose “M” or “F.” If the system doesn’t support the update, you’ll need to submit your application manually.

Impact on Transgender Passport Holders

The updated policy requires passports to reflect the sex assigned at birth. If your passport currently displays a gender marker different from your assigned sex, you can continue using it until it expires. However, at renewal or for new passports, the gender marker will align with the sex assigned at birth, as documented in supporting records.

This could cause delays for applicants requesting a gender marker different from their birth sex, as additional documentation may be required.

Does Your Birth Certificate or Driver’s License Need to Match Your Passport Gender Marker?

Your birth certificate or driver’s license does not need to match your passport’s gender marker. However, the Department of State may request documentation (e.g., birth certificate or previous passport) to verify your sex assigned at birth. Ensure your passport photo matches your current photo ID.

No medical documentation is required to update your gender marker. Who Can Use the Same-Day Passport Office in Dallas, Texas?

The Dallas Passport Agency is meant to serve travelers with urgent travel needs. To use this office, you need to provide proof of urgent international travel within 14 calendar days or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days. 

You may qualify for a life-or-death emergency appointment if you need to travel internationally in 3 business days because your immediate family member outside of the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening injury or illness.

How Do I Schedule an Appointment at the Same-Day Passport Office in Dallas, Texas?

To make an appointment, call 1-877-487-2778. There is no fee to make an appointment, however, availability is limited, and there can be strict eligibility requirements.

Currently there are only two types of appointments that can be made with a Regional Passport Agency.  Life-or-Death Emergency Service and Urgent Travel Service.

To enter the passport agency building, you must pass through a security screening and bring a government-issued ID. Leave guns and other weapons, food, and drinks in your car.  You may bring a bottle of water.  

Arrive 30 minutes early to get through security. But don’t come TOO early. You may not enter the Passport Agency office itself earlier than 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Regional passport agencies exist to help out travelers who need emergency passport services, but for a lot of people, they are not the easiest solution.
