Can I Renew My Passport by Mail?

To get a new passport, you have to appear in person at a passport acceptance office, usually a post office. What a drag! However, if you already have a passport that’s either approaching its expiration date or already expired, you may be eligible to apply by mail instead. How do you know if you’re eligible to renew your passport by mail? Just go through the checklist below-if you can answer “yes” to every single one of these questions, you can skip the passport office:

  • Were you at least 16 years when you received your current passport?
  • Do you still have your current passport?
  • Is your current passport in good condition?
  • Was your current passport issued less than 15 years ago?
  • Was your current passport issued in the name you currently use OR do you have legal documentation of your name change? Note: Depending on the circumstances, “legal documentation” can mean a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.

To renew your passport by mail, send the following documents to the Department of State (the address will be on the application) in a sturdy protective envelope:

  • 1 completed passport renewal application, Form DS-82 (don’t forget to sign it!)
  • Your current US passport
  • Name change documentation, if applicable
  • Two passport photos
  • Passport Fees: $110 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card, or a $140 for both together. If you’d like expedited service, pay an additional $60. It’s also suggested that you pay $14.95 for overnight shipping.

Once you’ve sent in your application, all you have to do is wait. Please be aware that if you order regular processing, it could take 6 weeks or longer for you to get your passport. If you requested expedited processing, you can expect to wait at least 3 weeks.

For faster service, you can apply in person at your nearest Regional Passport Agency Office, or use a private passport expediting service like RushMyPassport.com.

Using an expediter is a much more convenient option, since you don’t have to make an appointment or drive to the passport office. Plus, you’ll get personal service from an experience passport specialist, helping you avoid mistakes that could delay your application.

Do You Need a Passport to Go to Canada?

Canada and the US have a long tradition of being good neighbors to each other.  At one time, US citizens could cross the border with nothing more than a driver’s license. However, in recent years the laws have changed, leaving many confused.

Do you need a passport to go to Canada? In all likelihood, yes.  Since June 1, 2009, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) has required that Americans traveling to Canada by land or by sea carry one of the following documents as proof of citizenship:

  • A US passport book
  • A US passport card
  • A NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card
  • An enhanced driver’s license (only available in certain states)

The only exceptions are for children and people on “closed-loop” cruises. Children under the age of 16 can use their birth certificates, naturalization certificates or certificates of citizenship instead of a passport if they are traveling by land or by sea.

Children under the age of 19 can use birth certificates, too, provided they are traveling with an organized group such as a school group, church group, sports team, volunteer group or cultural organization.  The group must be supervised by an adult and carry a letter on organization letterhead that contains the name of the group, the names of the supervising adult and the children, and a signed statement certifying that parental permission has been obtained for all children on the trip.

Americans traveling to Canada on a closed-loop cruise (one that begins and ends in the same US port) can travel with their driver’s licenses or state -issued ID cards and their birth certificates or naturalization certificates.

Now, if you traveling to Canada by plane, the rules are different. You need a passport book (the passport card won’t cut it), and there are no exceptions, even for children.  Even if you are traveling by land or by sea, it’s a good idea to use a passport book in case you have to fly home unexpectedly.

RushMyPassport can make applying for  a passport much easier and faster. We’ll help you with your application and hand-deliver it to the US Department of State, resulting in processing times as low as 24 hours.

How To Expedite My Passport If I’m Supposed to Apply in Person?

When you use an expediting company to expedite your passport, there are some things you need to know before you submit your application.  For example, when you expedite your passport using an private expediting company, in most cases you have to mail all of your documents to the expediting company using an express mail service. However, the government requires you to apply for a passport in person in most cases. Only passport renewals that meet certain criteria can be submitted through the mail.  How can you expedite your passport by mail if you’re supposed to apply in person?

When you expedite a passport, if you are required to appear in person to submit your application, you’ll need to go in person to a passport acceptance facility to have an acceptance agent look over your documents, watch you sign your application, and seal the documents using a special government seal. Acceptance facilities are usually found in libraries and post offices. You can find a nearby acceptance facility here, at the US Passport Agency website.

Once your application package is sealed, nobody can open it again, except for the US Passport Agency. So, it’s extremely important that the application is filled out correctly and all appropriate documents are included in the package.  Then, you can mail your package to the expediting company for processing.

When you expedite your passport with RushMyPassport.com, you’ll be assigned an individual case manager and given specific instructions to make sure that the application process goes smoothly. Plus, you can have confidence that your passport will be there when you need it. Expedite your passport with RushMyPassport.com today!
