Step 2: Call a Vet

• Microchipping or tattooing for identification
• Rabies vaccine, plus time for the vaccine to “take” and blood tests to show the vaccine has been effective

You’re eligible to renew your passport using application Form DS-82 as long as all of the following conditions apply:

1. Your current passport has not been lost, stolen, or damaged.
2. Your current passport was issued after your 16th birthday.
3. Your current passport was issued no more than 15 years ago.
4. Your current passport was issued in your current legal name, or you have legal proof of your name change.

Required Documents for Passport Renewal

If you’re planning to renew your passport, the process is straightforward and requires a few essential documents. 

To ensure a smooth passport application, it’s important to have the necessary paperwork ready in advance. You’ll need the following documents to renew a U.S. passport

Although the standard processing time for passport renewal can take up to 6 weeks from the date of application, the actual processing time can vary depending on the current workload of the passport office. 

If you need to receive your renewed passport sooner, you can request expedited processing for an additional fee of $60, not including shipping or the required application fees. This will trim down the processing time to an estimated 2-3 weeks.

It’s important to keep in mind that these processing times are estimations that start from the date the Department of State receives your application, not from the date you submit it.

Applying for a Passport Renewal at a Regional Passport Agency

In case of urgent travel plans within 14 days, you have the option to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency for expedited passport processing within 3 business days.

While this may seem like the best option, there are some limitations. Only 26 Regional Passport Agencies in the entire country offer this service, and there are strict requirements for eligibility.

According to the U.S. Department of State, to be eligible for an emergency passport appointment, you must either:

1. Have urgent international travel within 14 calendar days or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days
2. Life-or-Death emergencies if you need to travel internationally in 3 business days because your immediate family member outside of the United States

If you’re planning a trip to Europe soon, there’s a big change coming your way. Starting November 10, 2024, the European Union will officially phase out the practice of stamping passports for non-EU tourists. Instead, the EU will introduce a digital Entry/Exit System (EES), which will streamline the border control process using biometric technology to track entries and exits.

Goodbye Passport Stamps, Hello Digital Border Controls

The switch to a digital system marks the end of an era. Physical passport stamps, which have been a keepsake of international travel for many, will no longer be used at EU borders. According to EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson, “At every single airport, every single harbor, every single road into Europe, we will have digital border controls.” This change will impact travelers visiting EU countries, simplifying the process by making it faster and more secure.

How the EES Works

Under the new system, non-EU visitors entering Europe will have their fingerprints and face scanned digitally. This biometric data will be used to verify a person’s identity at border crossings and will be stored for future visits. Once the system is live, border officers will cross-reference this biometric information with a traveler’s passport on their first visit, ensuring that each entry and exit is properly tracked. In future trips, these biometrics will be automatically verified at entry and exit points, making the border process faster and more efficient.

If you’re visiting Europe after November 10, be prepared for a quicker and more tech-savvy entry. This system not only eliminates the need for passport stamps but also provides a higher level of security and accuracy, ensuring that all entries and exits are correctly recorded.

What Travelers Need to Know

To use the new EES system, travelers must have a biometric passport. These passports, also known as e-passports, have been issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security since 2007. If your passport has a small symbol of two rectangles with a circle on the cover, it’s a biometric passport and ready for the EES system.

Travelers without a biometric passport, however, will face more thorough processing at the border and will not be able to use the self-service passport control kiosks. If you don’t have a biometric passport, consider renewing it before your trip to avoid delays at the border.

EES vs. ETIAS: What’s the Difference?

It’s important to note that the EES system is separate from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which is expected to be implemented in 2025. While the EES system will handle biometric data for border control, ETIAS is an authorization program designed to enhance security for visa-exempt travelers visiting the EU for short stays.

If you’re a U.S. citizen planning a trip to the EU, you will still need to apply for ETIAS authorization starting in 2025. Until then, having a biometric passport and utilizing the new EES system will streamline your entry into Europe.

Step 1: Decide How Quickly You Need Your New Passport

The first step towards applying for a new United States passport is understanding how soon you’re traveling, and how quickly you’ll need your passport to ensure it’s delivered prior to your trip. If you’re planning to leave the country sooner than later, you’ll likely need some type of expedited passport service. Current routine processing for a passport currently takes up to 8 weeks  If you want to get your passport in time, it’s important to choose the right expediting method from the start.

Expedited Passport Service at a Passport Acceptance Office

One option for expediting your United States passport is by requesting standard expedited services at the post office or another passport acceptance office.  You’ll pay a $60 expediting fee along with your regular application fees. And if you want overnight delivery, you’ll pay an additional shipping fee. Expediting at the post office will only get you 2-3 weeks service and is not guaranteed. Additionally, if there are any issues with your documents, your passport could be delayed.

Expedited Service at a Regional Passport Agency

Another path to getting a new passport is to attempt to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency, although there are some requirements. You must be departing for your international travel within 8 days or less or if you’re leaving in the next month and need to get a visa before you travel. In this situation, Regional Passport Agencies will typically get your passport to you within 8 business days, however, these appointments can be hard to obtain.

There are only a handful of regional passport agencies serving the entire country, and international travel. So, you may have to travel to get to the nearest one. Additionally, passport agencies tend to have limited operating hours. If you work during the day and can’t get time off, this may not be an option for you.

At a Regional Passport Agency, you’ll pay the same additional $60 expediting fee you’d pay if you were applying for passport expedited service at a Passport Acceptance Office.

Using a Passport Expediting Company

If you need your passport faster than a Passport Acceptance Office or the post office can provide, but you can’t (or simply don’t want to) go to a regional passport agency, then look into using a passport expediting company. A registered passport expediting company will take your application documents to the Department of State, where they will be processed in as little as 7 business days. The company will then ship your new passport back to you, usually overnight.

In addition to reducing the time it takes to receive a United States passport,  using an expediter also reduces the chance of mistakes that could delay your application. If there is a holdup at the passport office, the expediting company can inform you immediately so that corrections can be made, and your passport can make its way through processing and back to you in time for your trip.

When you use an expediting company, the first thing you’ll do is place an order. You’ll pay the expediting company for handling your application, and then you’ll pay the application and government fees separately, typically via check or money order.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Outside of your passport application, there are several required documents and forms of identification necessary to get a new passport. If you use an expediting company, they will likely assist you in gathering the necessary documents. • Proof of Citizenship:  Submit either a previous US passport, a certified birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, a Certificate of Citizenship, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.
• One passport photo.

• Going to a Passport Agency or using an expediting service?  You’ll need a copy of your itinerary, too. However, business travelers who haven’t booked a flight yet can use a letter from their employer.

Step 3: Fill Out Your New Passport Application

The next step is to fill out the application form for your new passport. Filling it out online and printing is recommended, as it will ensure that your application isn’t delayed due to the passport office not being able to read your handwriting. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can get a copy of the application at the post office. If you do, make sure to fill it out in black ink and write neatly. If you’re using Form DS-11, don’t sign it until you’re in front of an agent at the post office, otherwise, you may be forced to start over.

Step 4:  Visit A Passport Acceptance Agent

For all new passport applications in the United States a visit to a passport acceptance agent, also known as an adjudication agent, is required. The acceptance agent will verify the identity, the documentation, and the signature of the applicant. There is currently no way around this step, however, there are over 8,000 acceptance agents across the country usually located at your local library, county clerk, or post office. A separate fee of $35, known as the execution fee, is collected at this visit.

This process doesn’t have to be difficult. While many locations may require an appointment, locations at a library or county clerk’s office may have walk-in hours available. We highly recommend searching several locations in your area to find an acceptance agent with convenient hours and availability prior to choosing the correct method to obtain a passport. This step in the process is extremely important and can impact the time it takes to get your new passport. Use this tool to find a passport acceptance agent near you.

When using an expediting company, a letter of authorization (LOA) is also required at this step. This will be included in the documents supplied by the expediting company. The acceptance agent will seal and include the letter of authorization alongside all of your other documents in the adjudicated envelope. Then take this envelope and ship it off to your expeditor for service.

Step 5: Wait For Your New Passport to Arrive

Congratulations, you’ve done all the hard work. Now, all that’s left to be done is to wait. Passport processing times are fairly accurate, however, any mistakes or missing documents will cause lengthy processing delays. Additionally, high-volume seasonality such as holidays, or instances of natural disasters can impact processing times.

No. The EITAS is not a travel visa. This is a travel authorization for people who don’t need a visa to go visit Europe. This program mirrors the United States Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

ETIAS Requirements and Purpose

What to do when you can’t find your passport

A lost passport can be a disaster if you have an international trip on the horizon. Imagine…you’re leaving in a few days, and you’re taking a final inventory to make sure everything is in order for your trip. You open the drawer that you usually keep your passport in, just to double-check…and it’s not there! Where did it go?

It’s probably in your house, waiting to be found. If you’re searching for a lost passport, try using these helpful search tips. These common-sense suggestions will help you slow down and methodically search for your lost passport.  Of course, when it’s your passport that’s missing, it’s all too easy to throw common sense right out the window!

Dr. Solomon’s 12 Principles:

1. Don’t look for it-at least, not right away. Take some time to calm down first.
2. It’s not lost, you are! Your passport is probably right where you left it. You just need to determine where that would be.
3. To get into a mental state more conducive to finding the lost passport, remember the three C’s: comfort, confidence, and calmness.
4. It’s probably where it’s supposed to be, so check that drawer again.
5. If it’s not where it’s supposed to be, try to remember when you last had it. Was it while you were booking your flight? Did you decide to put it someplace even “safer” and then forget moving it? Check the area where you last remember having your passport.
6. You’re looking right at it…you’re just too upset to see it. Unless you were able to achieve and maintain the state of Zen-Like clarity called for in Principle Three, you could be looking directly at your lost passport and not even realize it’s there.  Take a deep breath, calm down, and look again.
7. Your passport could be camouflaged by papers, books, etc. Look under anything that might be hiding it.
8. Your passport doesn’t have legs. It can’t move itself, so you must have moved it…concentrate, and try to remember what you did with it.
9. Don’t wander around aimlessly in circles. Check every place you think your lost passport could conceivably be only once. However, check each location thoroughly.
10. Check in the immediate vicinity (an 18 square inch radius) of wherever you last had your passport or wherever you think it might be. It could have moved underneath or behind another object.
11. Think back to the last time you had your passport in hand. Where did you go? What were you doing?  Retrace your steps in case you set it down somewhere out of the way.
12. Unless you live alone, ask your spouse, your kids and anyone else you live with if they’ve seen your lost passport. For example, your spouse might have decided to round up the family’s passports and put them into one “safe” location without telling you.

How to Replace a Missing Passport

If you still haven’t found your passport, don’t panic! A lost passport doesn’t have to derail your trip. It’s possible to replace a lost passport. You will need to report your lost passport to the Passport Agency so they can invalidate your missing passport. In order to replace a lost passport, you will basically be applying or a new passport. Rule #1: Three Places to NEVER Leave Your US Passport

Protecting your passport means keeping it somewhere defensible. NEVER  leave it in any of these places:

• Your back pocket: This is the easiest pocket to pickpocket. You don’t have eyes in the back of your head.

Passport thieves are professionals. They don’t act randomly. They have a set of procedures they follow to maximize their chances of getting away with your passport.  The UK government released a video starring “honest pickpocket” James Freedman that demonstrates four of the most common tactics used by  thieves to steal your passport. Watch the video to see the following “passport hustles” in action:

• The Bottleneck: In a crowded area, the pickpocket bumps into the victim. The brief contact is all he needs to swipe the passport before becoming just another face in the crowd.
• The Hugger Mugger: Pretending to be hopelessly drunk, the pickpocket stumbles up to the hapless tourist and gives him a big hug…while snatching his passport out of his pocket.
• Lost Tourist: Holding a map, the thief pretends to be a tourist and approaches the victim to “ask for directions.” The map blocks the victim’s view of their purse or bag while the pickpocket helps himself to their passport.
• The Distraction: Working as a team, friendly pickpocket number one approaches the victim and asks a seemingly innocent question. Meanwhile, a second thief makes off with the victim’s bag or purse.

Also, the Daily Mail warns readers to be wary at airport security. One common trick:  After you send your personal items through the X-Ray machine, a thief cuts in front of you having conveniently “forgotten” to take his keys out of his pocket.  The result? You’re separated from your valuables just long enough for his accomplice to rob you blind.

Rule #3: Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe

Where should you keep your US passport when you travel? Of course you need to carry your passport while you’re in transit, but what about when you arrive at your destination? Some experts say it’s best to leave it locked in a hotel safe. Others say to keep it with you at all times. Consider the hotel’s reputation and your plans for the day before you decide.

When you’re out and about with it, the best place to keep your passport is the on a passport holder around your neck, under your clothes. Pretend it’s the one ring, and you’re Frodo Baggins.
